Weather Underground, il nuovo concept dei S.A.D.O.

Dall’incontro delle personalità musicali dei S.A.D.O. con quelle letterarie degli scrittori Guido Michelone e di Franz Krauspenhaar nasce questo nuovo lavoro. Si tratta di un concept album anomalo, in quanto unisce 25 brani di varia durata a parti recitate, pubblicato in formato DOPPIO CD per consentirne fruizione bilingue. I due supporti, pur contenendo lo stesso programma musicale, si differenziano: uno per le parti recitate in lingua italiana (con la voce dello stesso Guido Michelone) e l’altro per la versione in lingua inglese (con la voce di Stevn Thomas). L’attore Giovanni Battista Franco, parte integrante e insostituibile dell’organico S.A.D.O. ormai da tempo, recita in ambo le lingue la propria parte.

La prefazione al disco, sul retro di copertina, recita: “A story of love and war”. Una storia di amore e di guerra liberamente tratta della vicenda realmente avvenuta di Weather Underground, una discussa organizzazione di stampo sovversivo che ebbe vita negli anni ’70 negli Stati Uniti d’America. Considerato dagli storici un gruppo terroristico anomalo (non vi fu mai nessuna vittima a seguito dei loro attentati per la scrupolosa tempestività nel comunicarne ora e luogo), si batteva per i propri ideali attentando con ordigni esplosivi a strutture istituzionali (come il Pentagono o il quartier generale della polizia di New York) per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica su temi specifici, come la sterilizzazione forzata delle donne povere o più semplicemente la guerra in Vietnam.

Questo disco, tuttavia, prende drasticamente le distanze da qualunque schieramento ideologico (attitudine ampiamente superata e pertanto avulsa dalla filosofia di tutti i lavori dei S.A.D.O.) sottolieando invece l’aspetto puramente umano della vicenda, descrivendo delle persone che, credendo nei propri princìpi, erano disposte a giocarsi tutto per essi, “giusti” o “sbagliati" che fossero i metodi usati (questione morale come insieme di variabili soggettive pure). Né giudizi né ideologie in questo disco dunque, solo affreschi di stati emotivi e passioni umane.

Ogni brano rappresenta in qualche modo un episodio realmente avvenuto, anche se la parte strettamente musicale porta titoli autonomi e apparentemente slegati dalla vicenda. Le musiche sono state suonate in presa diretta in una unica sessione con l’aggiunta di copiose sovraincisioni successive. La definizione storico-genetica della musica dei S.A.D.O. sarebbe: "musica creativa ed improvvisata europea" ma loro preferiscono "avanguardia decostruttiva". Il gruppo, nell'atto creativo, effettua alla propria musica un processo di decostruzione ma giammai di redifinizione della medesima. Pertanto, dal punto di vista strettamente musicale, sono facilmente riconoscibili momenti di vera rottura rispetto agli schemi classici dei molteplici stili affrontati (seppur più blandamente rispetto ai lavori precedenti del gruppo) come ad esempio l’utilizzo del latrato come sostituto del classico assolo o l’uso creativo dei sintetizzatori con settaggi davvero estremi, al limite del paradosso.

Weather Underground, S.A.D.O.'s new concept album.

This new work arises from the meeting of S.A.D.O.'s personalities with the more literary personalities of Guido Michelone and Franz Krauspenhaar. It's an unusual concept album, as it combines music with an acted part, and it will be released as a DOUBLE CD, to allow a bilingual experience. Even though both media contain the same music plan, one includes spoken parts in Italian (through the voice of Guido Michelone), while the other features spoken parts in English (by Stevn Thomas). The actor Giovanni Battista Franco, an integral element of the group for a long time now, performs in both versions, playing his part in both languages.

The album's preface, on the package's back, reads the following: "A story of love and war loosely based on an actually occurred event". Weather Underground is the name of a famous subversive organization come to life in the Seventies in the United States of America. Being considered an "unusual" terrorist group (no victims were ever made by their assaults, due to the meticulous punctuality in notifying the time and the place), they fought for causes which they regarded as utopias for a better world, such as their blame on forced sterilization of poor women or, more simply, their complaint against the war in Vietnam. The vision in accomplishing this project keeps far from any political beliefs, a widely outmoded concept in S.A.D.O.'s philosophy, in an attempt, on the contrary, to underline the human aspect of the matter, when it comes to people who believed in a cause and who were willing to put their own life at stake for it, no matter whether their methods were fair or not. Therefore, this album contains no morals or ideology, just frescoes of human emotions. Each track depicts a true story in some way, but the more strictly musical component includes self sufficient titles, not bound, at times, to the general event. The music has been recorded live in a single session, with the addition of several subsequent overdubs.

Even though the historic-genetic definition of S.A.D.O.'s music would be "creative and extemporary European music", they would rather choose "deconstructionist avant-garde". D/banksville/imagesthe creative act, the group's music goes through a deconstruction process, which, though, is never a redefinition process. Therefore, from the strictly musical point of view, some instances of a true break with classical schemes can be easily noticed in the manifold styles they deal with (even if more mildly than in their previous works), such as the use of barking replacing the classical solo or the use of synthesizers with truly extreme settings, almost on the verge of paradox..
